The timing of this post could be better as they’re surprisingly on the verge of elimination, but the Golden State Warriors are a total powerhouse. The defending NBA champions had a record 73-win season this year and have almost rewritten how to play the game. As we do on TPS, it got me to thinking about who the alternative music version of Steph Curry and the gang could be. I really think – as you might’ve guessed by looking at the picture – that it might be Twenty One Pilots.
Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun are on fire. Sophomore album Blurryface was released in May 2015, taking the band to massive new heights. First single “Fairly Local” did well, “Tear In My Heart” did even better and “Stressed Out” blew up. Blurryface debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 and has gained accolade upon accolade since all over the world, including the band winning Top Rock Artist and Top Rock Album at this past weekend’s Billboard Music Awards (along with nominations for Duo/Group and Rock Song).
Twenty One Pilots are not only huge, but genre bending and seemingly rewriting how to genre with their eclectic fusion. Alternative hip-hop, pop and indie come together with instruments including piano (and its variants) and ukulele. That combination of success and flashy, unique style is what I think makes them the alternative equivalent of the Warriors. Tyler Joseph is Steph Curry and Josh Dun is Klay Thompson, and together music’s current version of the “Splash Brothers” are doin’ it their way. Are ya diggin’ it, or do you think the choice is as odd as the Warriors being down 3-1 to OKC? Seriously whhaaaaatttt?
